This past week,
I forgot to write this newsletter 😅
So here’s a short one on the benefits of sharing recommendations with friends, with a few extra curated gems from me at the end.
Let’s get into it.
Algorithms sort of suck
In the age of being constantly fed exactly what you want via your TikTok feed or personal playlist on Spotify, I think it’s time we lean back into the original media algorithm, our friends.
When was the last time you asked your friends what they’re listening to and then went down a rabbit hole with them or joined in watching a show that you’ve never heard about but “Jane” from soccer swears by? It used to be so fun getting pulled into each other’s weird worlds based on personal recommendation, and I think it’s time we do that again. So with that being said, here are a bunch of summer recs you may or may not love.
🎯 Curated Gems
🎧 Music: Ikey’s Quintessential Indie Songs Playlist
The name may be overpromising, but I can ensure that this 3h 51m playlist will take you back through the last decade of fantastic indie (and not so indie) songs, most of which you’ll be able to sing along to. From Goth Babe to Young the Giant to Poolside. Perfect for park hangs, beach getaways, or background music for game night
🎧 Music: Red Hearse
One of Jack Antonoff’s many brilliant sidequests. This album/band, which includes Antonoff, Sam Dew and Soundwave, is one that I’ve been listening to — all the way through —since it came out in 2019. Enjoy!
📖 Read: And Then There Were None: Agatha Christie
Awesome mystery book with twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end.
📖 Read: Eight Dates: Essential Conversations for a Lifetime of Love: John Gottman & Julie Gottman
If you’re in a relationship, you should read this book and do all 8 of the dates, it’s that simple lol.
📺 Watch: Steve Jobs: Director Danny Boyle
Damn, that Aaron Sorkin can write a good movie. Love or hate Apple, this movie is fantastic.
📺 Watch: Adults on Hulu
This won’t be for everyone, but I think it’s hilarious. A group of early 20s “adults” all living in a house in Queens, trying (and failing) to figure it out. Strong performances all around.
📺 Watch: Jaws: Director Steven Spielberg
I watched this for the first time last summer … it’s as good as people say it is. The perfect summer flick, especially if you can go see it in a theater.
🛖 Getaways: Get to the closest beach ASAP
Everyone always talks about going to the beach, so this is your friendly reminder to actually go and do it. Grab that book, get some snacks and go roast in the sun for a bit. At the very least, people watching will make it worth it.
🛖 Getaways: Book that cabin in the woods
A few weeks ago, I had my bachelor party in the White Mountains in New Hampshire. STUNNING! Collect your crew and go have a lo-fi weekend in the woods.
If you do, watch, listen or read any of these things, please let me know what you think. And since this is all about recommendations, please respond with recommendations of your own if you’re so moved to.
Sharing something you love with someone else is a small step you can take right now to strengthen your bonds with friends or soon-to-be friends. An easy way to feel just a tiny bit more connected in this messy world of ours.
With grateful love,
Ikey
